What is Valerian Root?

 Valerian (Valeriana officinalis, Caprifoliaceae) is a perennial flowering plant with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers that bloom in the summer. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, valerian has been introduced into North America.

How does it work?

Valerian for horses, dogs, and other animals seems to act like a sedative in the brain and nervous system. It has been used in the management of anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, mental strain, lack of concentration, excitability, stress, headache, nervous stomach cramps, uterine spasticity, menopause and pain, discomfort, and emotional distress that may occur with menstruation.
